It gives me great pleasure to welcome the traditional and historic Three Peaks Race to that elite group of long distance mountain running events selected each year to stage the WMRA World Mountain Running Challenge. We wanted to call this a championship, but of course WMRA, being patronised by IAAF, comply with their request to use the alternative term 'challenge' because the term championship is reserved for the official IAAF world championship series. Nevertheless we regard the winner of the selected long distance race each year as World Champion for long distance mountain running.
This will be the 54th edition and like many new initiatives it takes time to catch the imagination of athletes. In order to attract the participation of the World's leading athletes the organisers are committed to making a generous contribution to their travel expenses and providing accommodation. There is also the prospect of earning similar benefits for the following year's competition if they gain a high position. Regarding the race itself, I ran it once in my younger days. I would describe it as three up & down mountain races separated by two cross country races.
It is certainly an event which will test every aspect of the long distance mountain runners' fitness and skill and will be a worthy test for a world champion.
British runners regard the 'Three Peaks' as their territory so it will be fascinating to see who will take up the challenge to put a non British winner on the podium for the first time in the event's 54 year history.
