The Three Peaks Race Committee have been awarded the honour of hosting the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge in 2008 by the council of The World Mountain Running Association. Click here to see a message from the WMRA President. This award has been given in the face of stiff competition from other high profile European destinations. The 2006 race was held in Colorado, U.S.A. and the 2007 event will be the Jungfrau race in Grindelwald, Switzerland.
For 2008, the annual Three Peaks Race will be run as the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge. The Three Peaks Race, which traverses the famous Yorkshire Dales Mountains of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, is one of the oldest, most famous and best organised fell races in Britain. Click here for more information from Craven District Council about the area and the race. First run in 1954, the Race covers 24 miles of the most rugged and spectacular countryside in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, taking competitors to a height of 2,500 feet above sea level. The course record is held by English international Andy Peace of Bingley Harriers, who completed this gruelling challenge in 2 hours 46 min. 03 sec. The women's record of 3hours 16min 17sec is held by another English international Sarah Rowell.
Up to one hundred overseas competitors are expected to compete in the 2008 Race, including selected international elite long distance mountain runners for who the organisers must provide free accommodation and generous subsidised travel.
Councillor Paul English, Chairman of Craven Council's Community Services Committee congratulated the Three Peaks Race Committee on their success in being awarded the honour of staging the World Challenge. He said that as well as recognising the special quality of a landscape loved by so many, this accolade would launch a traditional Dales event on to the international stage. The Council looked forward to welcoming all the competitors, including those from overseas, many of which would be new to the area, nevertheless he was confident that everybody involved would enjoy being part of this special event.
Dave Hodgson, President of the Three Peaks Race Committee wishes to thank Craven District Council, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and UK Athletics for their help and support in winning the bid to stage this prestigious event in Yorkshire. The Committee is aware that a lot of work is still required to ensure that the 2008 Race is successful and organised to the highest standards expected for an international event.
The Three Peaks World Mountain Running Challenge Race will take place on Saturday, 26th April 2008, starting and finishing at Horton-in-Ribblesdale. In order to accommodate the event some of the rules of the Three Peaks Race have been amended, see race information. These amendments will apply only to the 2008 race.
